Planning permission was granted by the London Borough of Camden Council to Barratt London for an exciting new development. The development consisted of 128 new-build and refurbished homes built around landscaped gardens and a state-of-the-art pavilion providing a new home for The Hampstead School of Art.
The first phase of works began on the six structurally condemned three storey houses adjacent to the busy Finchley Road in North West London. These houses were built on the main road which is always a risky operation. However, the soft strip and roof removal was completed in this first stage without incident.
The second phase of the project consisted of the demolition of the buildings down to a three metre foundation. The demolition of these building was completed three weeks ahead of client programme, with not one complaint about noise, dust or vibration from neighbours or passing pedestrians.
Phase three was the completion of the art block. This meant façade retention of the buildings exteriors and the removal of the roof and all internals walls. The seven storey concrete frame remained to keep structural integrity intact. Once the façade was removed suitable foundations were made making way for a new core to be installed.
